Medical wikipedia

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Most people who rely on the internet to obtain information, they would definitely have used wikipedia before. It is an online encyclopedia where users can contribute and share information on various subjects. In other words, it is an information website by users, for users.

We can find just about any information on wikipedia, including that of medical topics. However, today I have found another wikipedia-like website that specializes on medical information. The website is called, Ask Dr Wiki - askdrwiki.com. You would be able to find subject on acute abdominal pain to Mesothelioma cancer.

It is just great. Another source of information!

Learn CPR.

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

My father in law underwent an open heart surgery last September. He had a slow recovery after that but was always weak since then.  It was  day before yesterday he was admitted to the hospital again due to difficulty in breathing.

It was then that we all the family members asked each other whether we all know something about CPR just in case. None of us really know how. I suppose many of us, without realizing how important it is to know CPR, just take it for granted until we are in a situation when CPR is needed.

Below is a video on how to do CPR and also using an AED - Automated External Defibrillators.

There are many more videos on how to do CPR on youtube.

Winter woes.

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

I have dry skin and the cold weather that we are having right now isn’t making it any better at all. In fact, made it worse due to the heaters, as well as the warm showers I take.

I have tried so many creams and lotions. The worse part is having to find the right one for my facial skin. Not only they can be dry and flaky, but acne prone as well. Imagine that. So if I use a creamy or greasy enough moisturizer, it would help the dryness but my skin would break out. But if I use an acne treatment, it would be extremely dry at the spot where I applied it.

I just bought Nivea creme in a blue tin 2 days ago. It is good. So far the dryness is slowly dissappearing, but I’m just afraid that acnes would follow.  I’m not talking about 1 or 2 pimples but many tiny ones. Just hope that won’t happen.

Skin problems - zinc deficiency?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

I was already fed up with the occasional rash, constant dry skin and acne I suffer from for years now. So instead of trying to find for an external solution, I have decided to cure the problem from within - taking vitamin supplements.

Do you know that when your body is suffering from zinc deficiency the symtoms includes skin problems? I just found that out recently myself. Although zinc deficiency symptoms vary from one person to another but here are a list of the symptoms:

• behavioral and sleep disturbances

• dandruff

• delay in wound healing

• diarrhea

• different kinds of skin lesions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne

• growth retardation

• hair loss

• hang nails

• hyperactivity

• increased allergic sensitivity

• inflammation of your nail cuticles

• inflammatory bowel disease

• loss of appetite

• loss of senses of taste or smell

• loss of sex drive

• mild anemia

• pre-eclampsia (toxaemia) in pregnancy and post-natal depression

• pre-menstrual syndrome, disturbance in your menstrual cycle

• reduced fertility

• skin dryness and rashes

• white spots on fingernails, transverse lines and poor nail growth

I thought of taking zinc supplements after reading about this and recalling when I wanted to donate blood, they had to check the zinc level before I am allowed to donate. It is always on par, just enough.

So I’ve been taking zinc supplements for about a week now. The result is rather surprising, the itchy rash and dry skin around my neck and arms have subsided.

Sometimes people tend to try cure a problemed skin from the outside when the problem needs to cured from the inside first. So if you’ve been suffering from any of these symptoms stated above, you may want to ask your doctor whether the problem is because of zinc deficiency.

Asbestos usage in Malaysia hopefully to be banned by 2010.

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

After reading about the dangers of using asbestos, I am rather surprised to learn that this material is not already banned in Malaysia. It is said that Malaysia only has regulations on the safe use of asbestos.

Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has already launched a signature campaign demanding the government to impose a ban on the use of asbestos in the contruction and manufacturing sectors by the year 2010.

I believe countries around the world should have Asbestos legislation enforced. This is because there is no such thing as a safe way to use asbestos since there is always a risk of inhaling asbestos and risk developing diseases like, mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.

In 2007, 60 year old Hazel Lea, died from lung cancer due to being exposed to asbestos while washing her husband’s working clothes. (source:http://www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/news?articleid=2857574)

I really hope that the goverment of Malaysia would take this matter seriously and would ban the usage of asbestos once and for all.

Flu season.

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

The last few weeks the entire family caught some sort of flu virus. Fortunately it wasn’t H1N1. But it was not pleasant at all when we were sick and still had to do all the housework on our own since everyone was sick.

Most people we know had flu in the past weeks. People at work, friends and neighbours. Even friends living in another country is complaining of flu.

Even though now everyone else at home seems to be feeling healthier but I am still coughing - gets worse in the nights - and my eyes are still slightly red. Even staring at the PC monitor is a little bit uncomfortable at the moment. Made me think that perhaps it is time for me to upgrade to an lcd monitor. I was told that an lcd monitor would be much friendlier to the eyes. Well, not to mention it looks a lot cooler too compared to an old fashioned monitor.

Anyhow, I’m quite sure I’d be a lot more myself in a few days time.  Just need to rest a little bit more.

Does fasting really help lose weight?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

There are various sort of fasting, but the type of fasting I’m talking about is the Islamic way of fasting. To abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk for the entire month of Ramadhan, which we are in currently.

Many of my Muslim friends look at this event as a way not only to observe their religious obligations but as a way to lose weight as well. It is also an opportunity to allow our digestive system to relax a bit.

I believe that if one consume less calorie than one needs everyday, eventually one would lose weight when the body burns the fat instead, in replacement of the calories that we didnt’ consume, in order to get energy. But most of the time this sort of fasting would only backlash when people don’t control their eating when they break their fast at dusk every day. It is something like yo yo diet too.

So does fasting really help lose weight? Yes and no. It all depends on how the person eats when he or she break fast. :)

Personal note:

Although some people may say that I am in the normal healthy range of weight, I still would like to lose slightly more. Perhaps about 4 kgs or about 8 lbs more. However, even with all the fasting, the weight simply would not go down beyond a certain point. It is as if it has reached its limit. Not that I totally believe that, but it does seem that way. I am considering to try Alli - the only FDA approved diet pill at the moment. Reading alli review online, perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to try seems it is claimed to be safe.

Though I may seem to dislike my current weight, I am not totally ungrateful that I am indeed feeling healthy. That is more important that being slim isn’t it?

Belly-dance lessons.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

I’ve been doing some belly dancing routines for a couple of weeks now. So how has it been? A mixture of opinion about it. :) Hard, nice, interesting and beautiful. If you’ve asked yourself before, how to burn fat the fun way, belly-dancing can be for you. Though it does need some mental concentration so that one can achieve that smooth, liquidlike movements.

I’m not going to any classes, but just using some dvd that I got not to long ago. One of them is by Sadie, the beautiful dancer on the video above. She is an amazing teacher. However, last week I saw a belly dance studio not to far from my place. Will check it out and see what they offer.
